ADER in partnership with the Abbé Pierre Foundation in Aid to the Homeless, launched a long term development programme in India in 1996, aimed at improving the living conditions and the housing of more than 50 000 people.

The populations concerned

The marginalized Indian populations of the State of Karnataka

  • Untouchable ( Dalit) women in the district of Kolar.
  • The inhabitants of the shanty towns of Bangalore, capital of the State.
  • The tribal village families in the bio-sphere reserve of Nilgiris.

Refugee Tibetan population

  • The refugee families in the encampments of Mundgod, Bylakuppe and Hunsur.
  • • The families of street vendors in the cities of Bangalore and Ooty.

Local partners

  • Local branch ADER India, which has become the local development NGO Namma Swantha Manne (NSM).
  • Local associations : FEDINA, GSS, CSA, KGFWA working in conjunction with NSM.
  • Local technical operators such as the Indian NGO Habitat for Humanity are also involved in the project.

Projects carried out

  • More than 400 hectares of land secured and developed for tribal families.
  • 400 houses built.
  • 800 houses renovated.
  • 40 wells of drinking and irrigation water installed.
  • Support to organisations on the field.
  • Setting up of technical training programmes.
  • Credit plans aimed at financing housing projects and economic activities.
